When you think of a “gym” or “fitness center”, what do you imagine?  Like most people, you imagine machine weights and lots of cardio equipment.  The more mirrors the better right?  The workouts consist of you looking at the pictures on the machines and trying to simulate them as much as possible.  Then you move on to the next one which is normally right next to it.  Every now and then you flex or check yourself out in the mirror.  The machines bear the majority of the load, setting an artificial line of action, forcing your body to follow its path.  People read magazines as they sit on a bicycle with their iPod hook up to it.  WOW… look at all the cool colors and buttons.  Is this “cardio?”  There is no creativity, no variance, only a structured environment for the routine people.

Is this an effective way to train for everyday life?

Take a deep breath for a second and think about stepping into a gym where you don’t lay or sit down comfortably before you apply strength.  How will your body react when it has to lift something from the ground to overhead and must set the line of action instead of having a machine do it for you?  How will body react if it doesn’t follow a weekly routine like every Tuesdays and Thursdays you do legs or back or bi’s?  Can you go into a workout not knowing what you are about to workout?  Can you imagine having trainers look at you and correct you instead of having mirrors?

Our definition of fitness is the ability to perform at any and all physical tasks, even unknown tasks. Fitness is not defined inside the walls of a gym; it is defined each and every day by your ability to deal with the challenges of life.  Our life is full of movement.  Our standing, sitting, throwing, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, running, and of course, jumping are all quite natural. These natural, primal, movements influence the exercises included in our Crossfit training.  We believe that the movements and exercises used in training should look normal outside of the training environment. We train using movements that pre-date the modern gym facility and philosophy. Long before Gold’s Gym or Life Time our ancestors were squatting, running, jumping, pulling, pushing, climbing and throwing. By training with these movements, we are “reconditioning” our bodies to function in a manner that they were designed. We intentionally blur the line between strength training and cardio training, just as nature does.
